Job Perks Are Dead

April 29, 2019

Job perks are dead.

If you’re looking to hire more in 2019, hear me out.

With competition to recruit top talent so high, how can you attract great employees?

What perks will have them seeking you out or accepting your offer over others?

The truth us: none of them.

Don’t get me wrong, perks can be a great way to show appreciation to your staff.

Perks can even be a great way to showcase a fun or healthy culture.

But no perk is enough to be the deciding factor when it comes to working for you.

Gym memberships, an office pool table, snacks in the kitchen or beer on Fridays isn’t compelling enough to accept a position.

No one has ever gone on Indeed or LinkedIn and searched “Pool table” in the jobs section.

This is not to be confused with career benefits, such as competitive pay rates, health insurance or a 401k match.

Great benefits can definitely get talent in the door. But perks can come off gimmicky or even cheap if you aren’t offering great benefits alongside them.

Evaluate what you’re actually providing for your employees.

Don’t be afraid to ask them what they think of certain perks if you still want to do a little something extra for them.

But don’t think that perks alone will ever get competitive, top talent through the door.
